Send in the clowns
5,000 YEARS OF FACE PAINT
Before the punchline, there was the painted face. Clowns have been with us for about five thousand years — court jesters, traveling players, circus kings, TV mascots.
And for the last fifty? Nightmares.
So here's the deal: the timeline, the famous faces, the dark side, and the actual science of why your skin crawls — then you vote.
1. The timeline
Tap an era. The clown didn't start funny — it started necessary.
2. The faces
Tap a name. These are the ones who made the clown what it is — and what it's not.
3. The dark side
Tap a case, watch the creep meter. How scared should you actually be?
4. Why they scare us
In 2023, researchers at the University of South Wales asked 528 people what freaks them out about clowns. Over half felt some fear; 5% had an extreme phobia. Tap a factor to see how strong the evidence is.
5. My take
Five thousand years and the clown keeps surviving, because the paint is a license. The jester could insult the king. Grimaldi could fall down for a living. The mask lets a person say what nobody else is allowed to say — and do what nobody else is allowed to do. That's the whole trick.
The dark side is just the other reading of the same fact: you can't tell where the act ends. Same mask, same grin, same hidden face. Funny and scary were never opposites for the clown. They were always the same job.
